Questions and answers

How long does it take?

A few minutes. Skip the interest and personality questions, or answer "Not sure", to finish sooner.

Do I need to know the person well?

No. Skip the interest and personality questions, or choose "Not sure." We'll lean more on interests and budget when personality is unknown.

What if I can't find their interest?

Add an interest in your own words if it isn't among the suggestions.

Does it show live prices?

Not live. Prices are captured when your results are generated and are not updated afterwards, so check the price at checkout.

Do you keep my answers?

Yes. Your answers and gift ideas are saved on our server under a result id so you can reopen your result. No retention period has been set yet. See our privacy page for details.

Is it free?

Yes. iGiftFinder is free for visitors and may earn revenue from affiliate links, advertising or sponsorships.

Is this a psychological assessment?

No. The questions draw inspiration from Big Five research, but this short gift-focused quiz has not been validated as a psychological test. Treat the result as a prompt for choosing a gift.

Five simple steps

How our quiz works

Shopping for someone else is hard because you have to guess what they would like, not what you would. This quiz asks about them. In a few minutes you get a short description of the kind of person they are and gift ideas to match.

  1. Tell us who the gift is for and why. Pick the relationship (friend or coworker, a family member, partner, or someone else) and the occasion, including "Just because" if there is no particular reason. The occasions offered depend on the relationship, so an anniversary is only offered for a partner, husband or wife.
  2. Set a budget. Choose the most you want to spend, starting from "Up to $25", or pick "No firm limit" if you are not sure. We will not suggest anything priced above your maximum.
  3. Pick up to three interests, if you know them. Choose from the common ones or search for something specific, such as a team or a hobby. The order you pick them in is the order we use. No idea? You can skip this step.
  4. Answer six short questions about their personality, as far as you can. Two each about how they approach new things, how social they are and how organised they are. Every question has a "Not sure" answer, so answer only the ones you can.
  5. Read the result. You get a short written description of their personality and a list of 20 gift ideas from live searches, grouped by interest, with the price the retailer returned when your results were generated.

The idea behind it

Why our quiz works

Most gift finders sort by age, interest and price. That works when you already know the hobby. A fan of a football team already has plenty of mugs. What helps is knowing which kind of gift suits them: something familiar or something unexpected, something for a crowd or for a quiet evening, something built to last or something playful.

So we add three things together:

  • Their personality, based on three traits: openness to new things, extraversion (how outgoing), and conscientiousness (how organised). The questions are short adaptations of the kind of items used in brief Big Five measures. We have not tested them for reliability or validity, so treat the result as a thoughtful prompt, not a diagnosis. You can read more in How Personality Shapes the Gifts People Love.
  • Their interests, in the order you give them.
  • Your budget, so the ideas fit what you want to spend.

Unlike a quiz about your own taste, this one is about the recipient. You answer for them.

What you get

What a result looks like

A result has two parts. First, a short paragraph about the recipient, for example how they tend to react to something new, and what that suggests about the kind of present they will enjoy. Second, 20 gift ideas from live searches run when you finish the quiz, grouped by interest, each with its picture, name, price and a link to view it.

Gift ideas selected from a marketplace offering more than 270 million products.
